Yo, Dalí is a full-length opera with all the ingredients. The opportunity to compose such a large work came to Benguerel through a commission from the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 2001 to commemorate the centenary of Salvador Dali’s birth in 2004. But the work was not premiered on that occasion and passed through many vicissitudes before it was finally staged at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid on 8 June 2011. For the libretto, the Benguerel turned to the Catalan playwright Jaime Salom, who wrote a very suitable story where hilarious scenes alternate with other very dramatic ones to give an idea of what the complex life of this painter with his many complexes was really like. The play revolves around two main characters, Dalí and Gala, while the others appear sporadically, even if they are as famous as Paul Éluard, Luis Buñuel and Federico García Lorca. It is written in four acts performed in two parts and the whole orchestrated work lasts about two hours. Yo, Dalí in the Liceo Theatre The first, second and fourth acts are each split into four scenes while the third has just one scene.
