Like every real musician, Montsalvatge liked to imagine new or unusual sounds. In his "noble profession" as composer, the problem - or "miracle" - is trying to find them. In the case of the guitar, specifically the guitar as played by Narciso Yepes, the instrument implies a rare provocation of an impressionistic nature. With the guitar, everything is evocative, distant, far-away and then, suddenly, it becomes intimate, trembling. Xavier Montsalvatge, however, didn’t just give up trying to capture the instrument’s subtle force: he preferred to subtlely impose his own thought, playing a game that ended up in a draw, perfectly balanced and thought-out.
