Don Perlimplin is the story of a noble from Granada who is persuaded by his housekeeper to marry Belisa, a young village girl. He is enraptured by her beauty and falls madly in love with her, but is unable to provide Belisa with the passion she seeks. In order to kindle a response, Don Perlimplin invents the character of a lover, with whom Belisa becomes enamoured. Disturbed by this love, Belisa confesses her feelings to Don Perlimplin, who is compelled to go and kill the lover that is none other than himself. After its premiere at the Liceu, the opera was not performed again until 1992, when the Cadaqués Orchestra, conducted by Víctor Pablo Pérez, staged it for the 6th Castell de Perelada Festival. Carmen Bravo, Mompou’s widow, provided the original score which had unfortunately lain forgotten all those years.
