The music critic, Antonio Fernández-Cid, once expressed his interest in publishing a collection of Galician songs. And so the provincial government of Orense commissioned twelve Spanish composers to set poems by the most important Galician poets to music.
Montsalvatge composed Meus irmans, a poem by Ramón Cabanillas, in response to this commission. It was published in 1952 by the same provincial government in a volume entitled Doce canciones gallegas. The volume is dedicated to Antonio Fernández-Cid and also includes works by Guridi, Mompou and Toldrà, among others.
It was first performed in 1951 at Orense by the soprano, Carmen Pérez Durías, with Carmen Díez Martin at the piano.
