Xavier Montsalvatge has always been passionately fond of dance, as shown by his prolific work in the field of ballet, for which he has composed over twenty scores. The piece entered for the Special Prize for Composition at the Conservatori Superior Municipal de Música de Barcelona in 1954, won the prize and was first performed on 6 May 1955, at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, by the Barcelona Municipal Orchestra conducted by Eduard Toldrà.
