A composer and guitarist of great personality, situated between the Classic and Romantic periods, Ferran (Fernando) Sor achieved fame through the music he composed for his own instrument. In doing so, he elevated the guitar to the status of concert instrument. Nevertheless, Sor also composed symphonies, concertos, piano music, operas, and a number of ballets which received their premieres at the main theatres of Europe.
