Conductor at the Santa Creu Theater of Barcelona, Carnicer dedicated himself mainly to opera, in a style halfway between Rossini and the bel canto composers such as Bellini or Donizetti. As a founder and first composition teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Madrid, he strongly influenced the Spanish music scene of the first half of the 19th c. He wrote symphonies, overtures, songs, chamber and quite remarkable church music, all of it within a completely Romantic aesthetic; he was one of the first composers to exploit the most exotic resources of Spanish Folk music during a time when it was beginning to be fashionable in the rest of Europe.
