Coinciding with the celebration of its centenary, this CD by Josep M. Ruera (1900-1988) comprises his most significant works, Empúries (a splendid symphonic poem for orchestra and cobla ûa small orchestra which plays Catalan folk musicû). Inspired by the music of Ancient Greece, it was performed for the first time with great success in 1936 in Barcelona during the XIV Festival de la Societat Catalana de Música Contemporània (SIMC, Catalan Society of Contemporary Music) and is now conducted by A. Ros Marbà); the quartet Ambiences, composed as a homage to Catalan folklore (an intimate work full of harmonic surprises), and the duet for flute and piano, Meditation (a brilliant reflection on the contrast between meditation and exaltation).
