Tres reflexos sobre una pastoral d’hivern (Three reflections on a winter pastoral), for string orchestra, was the final work composed by Xavier Montsalvatge. It was the last commission he accepted, and the thought that he might not be able to complete it caused him considerable anxiety. In fact, as he recorded on the manuscript, he began it in May 2001 and on 3 February 2002 he finished writing what he called the "synthesis of the piece". He died on 7 May 2002 at the age of 90.
