
Emmanuele Rincón de Astorga was a baron, an officer in the army and he was in crush of Sicilian rebellion. Although Astorga began his studies when he was a child he continued how a self-made composer and never worked as a professional musician. He was well-known for his chamber cantatas and scenic music. Astorga became part of the circle of the Duke of Uzeda, Spain’s papal ambassador in Rome. There he made friends with the Neapolitan poet Sebastiano Biancardi, who provided the texts for some of his cantatas. His most popular operas are La moglie nemica, L’amor tirannico and Dafne.
After his forties he journeyed through all of Europe then his music was founded in lot of places. Manuscript cantatas were composed in Lisbon since 1721 to1722 and Aci e Galatea, was performed in Barcelona in 1721. Il Sacrifizio di Diana and Dos villancicos were sung at the cathedral of Lisbon in 1723. In 1726 Astorga published a volume of 12 Cantadas humanas a solo with Spanish and Italian words which was his only work printed in his lifetime. The Stabat mater appeared in print several times during the 19th century and took a permanent place in the European repertory from the beginning of the 20th. It isn’t known exactly where and when he died. It’s exists a novel and a biography were written about him because his life produces lot of legends.
