Presentation: The crystal flutes of Claude Laurent
Claude Laurent, a Parisian watchmaker born in 1774, achieved what seemed impossible: to devise a concert flute, constructed of glass and silver, immune to the alterations experienced by wooden instruments due to atmospheric variations; a flute of great beauty and technical workmanship and exceptional timbre qualities that captivated musicians, tsars and emperors, Napoleon Bonaparte among them. This book tells the story of a musical instrument and its creator, and at the same time reflects the various transformations that took place during the 1800s.
We invite you to the presentation of the book "The crystal flutes of Claude Laurent. The instrument that captivated Napoleon" by Montserrat Gascón. The event will be attended by the author and Romà Escalas, musicologist and former director of the Museu de la Música de Barcelona. Apart from the parliaments, we will also be able to hear a couple of pieces performed by Montserrat Gascón with a five-key glass flute built in 1823 by Claude Laurent in Paris. It will be the occasion to test the opinion of Eugeni d'Ors, who compared the sound of a flute with the pure voice of the angels.
