Theme, variations and coda for wind quintet dates from 1982, when the composer was still studying with Xavier Montsalvatge. Based on a theme with a chorale-like texture, its five variations exploit each of the five wind instruments’ expressive, virtuosic and lyrical possibilities, and the work ends with a brilliant coda.
