It cannot be disputed that Catalonia has a very rich folklore, the most notable part of which is perhaps an extremely luxuriant selection of folksongs. With his adaptation for voice and piano of this series of popular Catalan melodies, Manuel Garcia-Morante has succeded in solving what I consider to be the most difficult problem: with a total respect for the purity of their ancestral lyricism, he interprets them with a pianistic accompaniment that is deliberately simple but, at the same time, subtle and refined. A further interesting point about this collection is that it deals with semantic aspects and the pronunciation of the words of each song, as it includes phonetic versions of all the lyrics, together with translations into four languages, which puts this work within the reach of all singers and students of this subject.
