When exams were announced in 1849 for the post of the Madrid Conservatory’s Professor of Clarinet, Carnicer was called upon to compose the contest piece for the exam. The result was this Fantasía para clarinete obligado con acompañamiento de pianoforte, which follows the typical pattern of a slow rhapsodic introduction followed by a ternary fast movement. Carnicer demonstrated his stylistic leanings in the way that he varles the thematic material whilst the purpose of the work determines not only the level of virtuosity required from the solo part but also the simplicity of the piano accompaniment. This orchestration by Joan Enric Lluna and Daniel Blanco, was premiered at February of 2015 in Valencia (Spain) by thje Manchester Sinfonietta.
