This score is one of the items from the collection of Latin American arrangements for various instruments. The title places the emphasis on folk music: indio songs from the Andes, Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Colombian rhyhms such as samba, baiao, maracatu, and cumbia. The arrangements are far removed from clichés. Instead, it has attempted to recreate the typical sounds, harmonies and rhythms of this music using conventional instrurments. The arrangements are well suited for flutes or violins, but all other melody instruments will sound equaly good. The two melody parts are also set for transposing instruments in B-flat.
Each piece is given a writtenout accompaniment pattern for percussion instruments. Special attention has been given to the contrapuntal but relatively simple choral writing to keep it within the range of school choruses and small vocal ensembles. As a guide to pronouncing the Spanish and Portuguese texts and the German and English translations.
