In the excellent text that accompanies this CD, El gato con Botas is a young work but well put strong and majestic, based on a libretto by Nestor Lujan, more than half a century after its composition is still alive and playful as the fantastic animal that is its reason for being! This is the first opera by Montsalvatge, premiered in the Liceu theatre in Barcelona on the 10th of January, 1948, raising to highest levels a traditional story that is universal as is the old fable using for inspiration a child’s fairytale. Planned as an opera in one act, it is not aimed at children but to the general public, Montsalvatge submerges us in a fantasy of magic and love. This version is under the direction of Antoni Marba, a close friend of Montsalvatge who understands how to bring out the rich colours of his orchestrations. This Cd as well as all in the Montsalvatge series contains a multimedia file with one of the last interviews given by Montsalvatge as well as pictures of the recordingIn words of the musicologist Enrique Franco.
