Terradellas, Domènec
Barcelona 1713 - Roma 1751Born in Barcelona, Terradellas obtained his musical training at the Naples Conservatory and became one of the most prestigious opera composers of his time. Despite his premature death, his operas rivalled those of Handel, Pergolesi, Hasse, or Jommelli throughout Europe, and the French Encyclopedistes (e.g. Rousseau, D’Alembert) regarded him as a model for naturalness and bon goût in music. The lyricism in his works and idiomatic writing for the human voice is characteristic of the period of transition from Baroque to Classical styles.
